bookmark_bordercosta coffee

Was looking forward to visiting Costa Coffee after reading about it in the newspapers. So I went there last week. It is somewhere on the outer cirlce at Connaught Place, I think it was “L Block”.
The coffee was nothing to write home about. I hoped for something better than Barista but that was not to be. Atleast the coffee in Barista is hot. At Costa Coffee the waiters serve the coffee at the table. We had to wait for more than 15 minutes for our coffee, and when it was finally served, the hot coffee was not hot at all.

The bakery products looked tempting, though I did not try them.

So for me the best coffee exprience in Delhi remains the one I have at my office daily, with Lavazza’s Expresso Italiano made in a Kenwood coffee maker. My desire for a better smelling and tasting coffee from the professional baristas remains unfulfilled. Maybe I’ll have to wait till starbucks decides to open a cafe in Delhi.

Kyle
The most unusual thing about 19-year-old Kyle Maynard isn’t that he’s already in the Wrestling Hall of Fame.

It’s not that he currently holds the world’s record for modified bench press in his division.

And it’s not that he’s being honored as the World’s Strongest Teen.

The most unusual thing about Kyle Maynard is that he’s done all this – and much more –
after being born in 1986 with a rare condition called “congenital amputation.”

Typically, this results in a missing finger or toe. But in his case, it is a more unusual and serious case of quadramembral phocomelia. That means he has no hands and no feet. In fact, he has no limbs at all below the elbows and knees.

Read more about him here

And if you are looking for motivation, read Kyle’s book “No Excuses”

From The Economic Times

The capital is all set to get its first very own special economic zone (SEZ). The Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) has tied up with the Delhi Trade and tourism Department to set up a gems and jewellery SEZ in the capital. The project involves an investment of around Rs. 250 crore, excluding the cost of land. The consortium will soon be taking a decision on the financial consultant for the project.

The SEZ is expected to sport global mega brands like Donna Karan and Gucci among others. “We want this to be a world class business hub. The intention is to bring in all the big names like Donna Karan and Gucci into India to exploit domestic strengths and manufacture at low cost. We want to ensure that Indian citizens no longer need to visit Dubai and Malaysia to shop for jewellery. On the contrary, we are looking at capturing the markets in SriLanka and Burma. Delhi should be visited by SriLankans for its state-of-the-art jewellery designs,” Mr. Jalal Srivastav, managing director, DSIDC, told ET.

The mega Project intended at promoting the 7,000 unorganised jewellers across Delhi involves both front end and back end operations. “We are looking at setting up a global business hub involving both national and international players to promote exports of gems and jewellery from Delhi,” says Mr. Srivastav.

The MOU for the mega project has been signed between the DSIDC and Delhi Trade and Tourism Department.
Says Mr. Srivastav: “We have identified about 18 acres of land in West Delhi that will house two hotels, one habitat centre and the gems and jewellery business centres. Apart from that, we are looking another 80 acres of land at Najafgarh for the back end operations. However, the MCD is yet to give its clearance

My wife runs a jewellery manufacturing and retailing business so I have pretty much a first hand experience of how things work in this industry in Delhi

  • This is a much needed initiative. We need good designs and good designers badly. We have to move beyong the “kitne tole ka hai” mentality, to appreciating the quality of gemstones and diamonds and the designs. Presence of international brands, right in the center of the city and not in branded boutiques in five star hotels may help. Even the designs that World Gold Council shows in their ads are not available at any jewellers in Delhi. Mumbai is different from Delhi in this regard as it is very common to hear terms such as “bombay design”, “bombay finish” and “bombay making”.
  • I am sure there are more than 7000 jewellers in Delhi.
  • Front end operations in West Delhi and back end operations in Najafgarh, I think apart from availability of land, accessibility by Delhi Metro could be a factor too.

bookmark_borderMetro from CP to DU

Delhi Metro: A dream come true

Daily, I read in the newspapers, about the new metro line from CP to DU running full capacity. It is great news. To sustain the high standard that metro intends to set for Delhi, Delhi Metro must be a profitable venture.
I read about trains being delayed because of overcrowded compartments. I think very soon we might need “Professional Pushers” like those at JR stations in Tokyo. These JR employees, push people when the pneumatic doors are closing, so that they can be packed inside the compartment. Once the doors get closed, there is a lot of space automatically created for everybody to stand comfortably. The Yamanote line, which circles Tokyo like our ring road is the most famous for these professional pushers.

I hope to get a ride of the underground section sometime soon.

Kakori kebab: melts in the mouth

Kakori kebab, the stories tell was first prepared by the cooks of the Nawab of Kakori in Awadh, who had lost his teeth but not the craving for Kebabs. These kebabs are so soft that they melt in the mouth. The cooks say that there should be the right proportion of papaya mixed with minced meat for the kakoris to have this softness.

In Delhi, I have had Kakori at two places and have liked them at both of these

I first had it at “Aap ki Khatir barbeque”, which was at the Humayun’s tomb near Nizammudin. But later had to move to a place around 50 metres away from its awesome location. Jagmohan found it not worthy of being so close to a heritage monument.

The second place I had Kakoris was at Delhi Haat’s Awadh stall… I think the stall’s named Shaan-e-Awadh or something similar.

Do you know of any other place that serves this delicious kebab? I have heard about Al-Kauser but have still to try it there.

BlogLines... a kewl service

As the number of blogs that i read daily increased I tried using a RSS2IMAP tool to read the blogs. But it was very unmanageable and used to clutter my outlook. Later I discovered bloglines. It is very convenient and has a lot of very useful features.

Now i never miss a post and do not have to have any software running on my own pc for it.

bookmark_borderDry Day

http://www.fromdelhi.com/wp-images/liquor.jpg

I searched for “dry day” on google. It showed up results about rainfall, bed wetting and menses..
The sites from India, showed results consistent with the meaning that we have attached to “Dry Day”. It is not lack of rainfall or “absence of bed wetting”. It is that day in India, when no alcohol is sold at the Liquor shops. Even the bars do not serve
liquor on a dry day.

Most of the festivals and public holidays are declared as a dry day in India, to avoid people from drinking themselves crazy.

And the government publicizes the dry days for each month in all the newspapers, so that people can stock their drinks and be prepared for the dry day.

I simply fail to understand the logic of having dry days. Those who have to drink themselves crazy will do so anyway, dry day or wet day.

http://www.fromdelhi.com/wp-images/pizza_hut.gif

We went to the Pizza Hut at Karol Bagh yesterday. My advice to anybody planning to go there… avoid it . The service was pathetic. The food was not good. The olive oil in our Sphagetti was stale. And it took them 10 minutes to find a bottle of tabasco sauce for us.

If you like a pint of Foster with your food, head to Pizza Hut C.P. They don’t even serve beer at Karol Bagh.
The C.P outlet is worth the wait.
